United charges 120,000 MileagePlus miles for the same lie-flat seat on the same flight, and 37,600 miles for a coach seat on that same aircraft. The route runs through Copa Airlines ConnectMiles, a program that until yesterday was effectively unreachable for anyone who doesn’t fly Copa. What Changed on September 1
ConnectMiles prices partner awards on a fixed, region-based chart rather than the dynamic pricing United uses on its own inventory. That has been true for years and it has never mattered to US travelers, because there was no realistic way to accumulate ConnectMiles. Marriott Bonvoy was the only transferable currency that reached the program, and it moved at 3:1, which works out to 165,000 Marriott points for a single transcon seat. Nobody was doing that math and coming out happy.
Rove transfers at 1:1. With the 40% launch bonus, you are effectively acquiring ConnectMiles at 0.71 Rove Miles each. A fixed award chart plus a discounted on-ramp adds up to pretty cheap lie-flat transcon seats.
The Math on a 120,000 Mile Seat
I priced a real flight I am booking, rather than a hypothetical. United Polaris from Los Angeles to Newark.
United wants 120,000 MileagePlus miles plus $5.60 for that seat. The cash fare is $1,937, which puts United’s own award pricing at roughly 1.6 cents per mile. That is dynamic pricing behaving exactly as designed, and it is why experienced people almost never burn United miles domestically.
ConnectMiles prices the identical flight at 55,000 miles plus the same $5.60, as a Business Standard award. Divide by the 40% bonus and you need 39,286 Rove Miles, so call it 39,300 for rounding. You are saving 80,700 miles on a seat United is selling you either way, and getting about 4.9 cents of value per Rove Mile in the process, which is roughly double what Rove Miles return on direct hotel redemptions.
The comparison that should actually stop you is one cabin back. United charges 37,600 miles for economy on this exact flight. The lie-flat bed, booked through Copa with Rove Miles, costs 1,700 more than United’s price for the middle seat.
Saver Versus Standard
Under ordinary circumstances a Standard award is the wrong redemption, because Copa’s Standard pricing runs roughly double Saver across the chart. Here it isn’t, because the alternative is not a cheaper award, it is no award.
If you do find Business Saver space, secondary reporting puts United transcon Saver business at 25,000 ConnectMiles, which would be about 17,900 Rove Miles and close to 11 cents per mile. Treat that as a lottery ticket rather than a plan, and confirm the number in a live search before you transfer against it.
How to Book It
Open a free ConnectMiles account first. The name has to match your Rove account exactly, and transfers are one way and irreversible, so this is not a step to improvise.
Search the exact flight on Copa’s own site before you move a single mile. The partner award chart published on Copa’s website is currently out of date, so it is not a reliable price quote. Only the live search is. Confirm the flight prices at the number you expect and that it is genuinely bookable, then transfer from Rove, wait for the miles to land, and book immediately. Standard inventory is wide but not unlimited.
Bottom Line
United will sell you the middle seat for 37,600 miles. Copa will sell you the bed for 39,300 Rove Miles, on a published chart, on a date that is actually open. It is not the lowest number anyone has ever printed for a United transcon. It is the lowest number you can reliably book, and until September 30 it comes with a 40% discount on the way in.
