This is a big deal. Flying Blue almost never extends these offers to American travelers, and the last time they did, it disappeared quickly. If you’ve been curious about the SkyTeam world or want lounge access on Delta, Air France, KLM, and more, this is your window.

Let me break down exactly how it works, what it costs, who qualifies, and whether it’s actually worth your money.

What Is the Flying Blue Status Match?

Flying Blue has partnered with StatusMatch.com to offer a paid status match that lets you convert your existing airline elite status into Flying Blue Silver or Gold status. The process is straightforward: you apply through the StatusMatch.com portal, submit proof of your current elite status, pay the fee, and wait for approval.

For U.S. residents, the pricing looks like this:

Flying Blue Silver: $99 Flying Blue Gold: $199

One important caveat right up front: U.S. and Canadian residents are not eligible for Flying Blue Platinum. Gold is the highest tier available to us. But here’s the thing: Gold is actually where the real value lives for most travelers, because it comes with SkyTeam Elite Plus benefits that work across every SkyTeam airline worldwide.

Once you submit your application, you should hear back within 3 to 5 business days. If approved, your Flying Blue account gets updated with your new status, and you’ll hold it for a full 12 months from the date of approval.

Which Airlines Can You Match From?

The list of eligible airlines is surprisingly broad, covering programs across all three major alliances plus independent carriers. If you hold elite status with any of the following programs, you may qualify for a match.

The status you receive depends on where your current status falls in the hierarchy. Generally speaking, entry-level elite status maps to Flying Blue Silver, mid-tier status maps to Gold, and top-tier status maps to Platinum (though again, Platinum is off the table for U.S. residents).

So if you’re sitting on American Airlines Gold or United Premier Silver, you’d be looking at a Silver match. American Platinum or United Premier Gold and above would line up with Flying Blue Gold.

Flying Blue Silver (SkyTeam Elite) gives you priority check-in and baggage drop, free standard seat selection, seat options opening up 24 hours before departure, and an extra checked bag on SkyTeam flights. It’s a nice baseline, but the real action is at Gold.

Flying Blue Gold (SkyTeam Elite Plus) is where things get genuinely interesting. You get everything Silver offers, plus SkyTeam lounge access worldwide (including for a guest), SkyPriority treatment at every touchpoint in the airport, seat options opening 72 hours before departure, and 7 miles earned per euro spent on flights. That lounge access alone could pay for the $199 fee in a single trip.

Think about what that means in practice. Next time you fly Delta domestically, you could walk into a SkyTeam lounge. Flying KLM through Amsterdam? Lounge access with a guest. Air France through Paris CDG? Same thing. The SkyTeam Elite Plus benefits follow you across all 19 member airlines.

How To Apply for the Flying Blue Status Match

The process takes about five minutes:

1. Make sure you have a Flying Blue account. If you don’t, create one for free at FlyingBlue.com.

2. Head to flyingblue.statusmatch.com and start your application.

3. Select the tier you’re matching to (Silver or Gold for U.S. residents).

4. Upload proof of your current airline elite status. This can be a screenshot of your account showing your tier, your digital membership card, or similar documentation.

5. Provide a government-issued ID confirming you’re a U.S. resident.

6. Pay the application fee ($99 for Silver, $199 for Gold).

7. Wait for approval. You should hear back within 3 to 5 business days.

One status match per person is allowed under this campaign. And there’s no published end date, but Flying Blue has pulled the U.S. eligibility window before without warning, so I wouldn’t sit on this one.

The Points Angle: Why This Matters for Transferable Points Holders

Here’s where this gets especially relevant if you’re playing the points and miles game with transferable currencies.

Flying Blue is a transfer partner of Amex Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou Points, Capital One Miles, and Bilt Rewards, all at a 1:1 ratio. That makes it one of the most accessible airline programs for award bookings, and having elite status on top of your points stash makes those redemptions even sweeter.

Is the Flying Blue Status Match Worth It?

For $199 to unlock Flying Blue Gold, the math works out pretty quickly if you have even a couple of SkyTeam flights on your calendar. A single lounge visit for two (you plus a guest) typically runs $50 to $80 per person at independent lounges. Two trips through a SkyTeam hub and you’ve already recouped your investment in lounge access alone.

Beyond the lounges, the priority check-in, boarding, and baggage benefits reduce friction on every SkyTeam flight you take for the next year. And the extra checked bag allowance adds real savings if you’re a frequent international traveler.

The one thing to keep in mind is requalification. After your 12 months of matched status expire, you’ll need to earn status the traditional way through Experience Points (XP). You need 100 XP for Silver and 180 XP for Gold. XP earnings depend on your flight distance and cabin class, and flights within a single country earn a flat XP amount regardless of distance.

Here’s an interesting wrinkle, though. Flying Blue’s status qualification works in tiers. If you match to Gold, you’d only need to earn 300 XP during your matched year to step up to Platinum. Starting from scratch without any status, you’d need 580 XP to reach the same level (100 for Silver, then 180 for Gold, then 300 for Platinum). So the status match effectively gives you a shortcut up the ladder.

Yes. These U.S. eligibility windows have historically been short-lived. The last time Flying Blue opened status matching to American residents, the offer was pulled within a few months. There’s no published expiration date on this round either, which means it could close at any time.

If you hold elite status with any qualifying airline and you fly SkyTeam carriers (or even Delta domestically) more than a couple times a year, $199 for 12 months of Gold is a straightforward value play. Even if you’re primarily a oneworld or Star Alliance flyer, having SkyTeam Elite Plus in your back pocket for opportunistic bookings is hard to argue against at this price.
