United MileagePlus Chase cardholders just got a major new earning opportunity, one that turns your single biggest monthly expense into a status-earning machine.

Starting today, Bilt members who pay rent using a participating United MileagePlus Chase credit card will earn 2 total United miles per dollar, up to $50,000 in rent per year. There is no promotional window, this is a permanent benefit.

And if you fly United even semi-regularly, this is worth paying attention to. For the right traveler, this is a shortcut to building balances and inching toward elite status.

Why This Is a Big Deal

Rent is usually the one expense you can’t earn meaningful rewards on. Most cards treat rent like a non-bonus purchase, and many landlords charge painful third-party processing fees.

Bilt changed the game by turning rent into a points-earning category. Now, United and Chase are layering an additional bonus on top.

Here’s what United cardholders get:

  • 2 total miles per $1 in United MileagePlus miles
  • Up to $50,000 per year
  • Miles post separately (1 mile from Bilt, 1 from the credit card)
  • Ability to earn toward Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs) via your credit card spend

How the Double Rewards Work

The process is simple:

  1. Add your eligible United MileagePlus Chase card to your Bilt Wallet
  2. Set that card as your rent payment method
  3. Pay rent on time through the Bilt app or website
  4. Earn:
    • 1 mile per $1 from United as a card reward
    • 1 mile per $1 from Bilt as a “Rent Cardmember Bonus”

Eligible United consumer cards include:

  • United Gateway
  • United Explorer
  • United Quest
  • United Club
  • United Presidential Plus

But Let’s Talk About the Fee: Should You Use a United Card for Rent?

If you use a United card (or any non-Bilt Mastercard) to pay rent through Bilt, you’ll incur a 3% fee. That fee changes the equation dramatically.

For most people, paying rent with a fee every month isn’t a winning long-term strategy. But there are a few situations where it could still make sense.

When It Does It Make Sense

You should consider paying rent with a United card only if:

1. You’re very close to booking a high-value redemption

If a single rent payment gives you the last few thousand miles you need for something premium, like Polaris to Europe or a partner long-haul award, paying the fee may be worth it.

2. You’re pushing for United Premier status

If you’re using credit card spend to earn PQPs and you’re right on the edge of a new elite tier, running a month or two of rent through your United card can move the needle.

When It Does Not Make Sense

If you’re not working toward a specific redemption or an elite status threshold, the 3% fee simply isn’t worth paying month after month.

In that case, the smarter move is to use the regular Bilt card to pay your rent without a fee and earn flexible points instead. Note: Bilt has currently paused all new applications until February.

Bottom Line

The new United × Bilt earning partnership can be excellent, but only if you use it strategically.

  • Paying rent with a United card can be smart in targeted situations
  • But the 3% fee makes it a bad long-term play for most people
  • Use this lever only when it unlocks something specific and valuable
