I just experienced something that made me appreciate Qatar Airways even more than I already do.
Here’s what happened: I booked award tickets to Vietnam via Doha specifically to experience Q Suites on the longhaul segments. The routing was solid on paper, but as our departure date approached, I started having second thoughts. The total journey time was 38 hours. Thirty-eight hours. What seemed like an exciting Q Suites adventure when I booked it suddenly felt like an exhausting commitment.
Then I found some amazing last-minute award availability that would get us to Vietnam in just 14 hours. The problem is I’d already ticketed our Qatar Airways flights. I needed to cancel and rebook.
This is where most people assume they’re stuck with their original booking or facing hefty cancellation fees. But Qatar Airways’ cancellation policy completely surprised me.
What It Actually Cost to Cancel
Total cancellation fee for both passengers: $50 USD.
That’s it. For comparison, I had to cancel our Air Canada repositioning flights for the same trip, and that cost me $218 ($300 CAD) for two tickets. More than four times what Qatar charged, for a much cheaper and shorter flight.
How Qatar’s Cancellation Policy Actually Works
Qatar uses a tiered system based on your elite status and how far in advance you cancel. Here’s the breakdown:

For Burgundy and Silver members (which is most people), the fees are:
- More than 24 hours before departure: $25 per person
- 3 to 24 hours before departure: $100 per person
- Less than 3 hours before departure: Non-refundable, you only get taxes back
For Gold and Platinum members, the main member pays nothing regardless of when they cancel. Other passengers on the same booking pay the standard $25 or $100 depending on timing.
I canceled more than 24 hours out, so we paid $25 per person.
The Refund Timeline
This is where Qatar really shines. When you process the cancellation through Qatar’s live chat, your Avios return to your account immediately.
The taxes and fees take 14 to 28 days to refund, which is standard for most airlines. But getting those miles back instantly means you can rebook right away if you’ve found better availability.
Why This Matters More Than You’d Think
Your miles never go back to your credit card when you cancel an award ticket – they are stuck with the airline. In this case, they return to your Qatar Airways Privilege Club account. But here’s why that’s actually a good thing: Avios are incredibly flexible.
Qatar Airways is part of the Avios program, which means you can transfer those miles between Qatar, British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus. If you decide Qatar doesn’t have the award space you want, you have options.
In my case, I know exactly how to use those points in the near future to book First Class to Japan.
Comparing to Other Airlines
Let me be clear: some airlines offer completely free award cancellations. If you’re comparing Qatar to those programs, Qatar’s $25 fee looks like a negative.
But most airlines don’t offer free cancellations. When you’re looking at $75 to $150 per person to make changes, Qatar’s $25 fee starts looking pretty reasonable. And if you have Gold or Platinum status, the main member pays nothing at all.
When This Policy Actually Helps
Award availability changes constantly. You might book the best option available six months out, only to find that better space opens up closer to departure. Qatar’s relatively low cancellation fees make it feasible to rebook when something better appears.
It’s also helpful for testing itineraries. If you’re choosing between two different routings and want to hold the space while you figure out your plans, $25 is a reasonable price for that flexibility.
I initially booked the 38-hour journey because Q Suites was available and I wanted the experience. As the trip approached and I realized we’d spend more time traveling than I wanted to, so being able to cancel for $50 total and get my Avios back immediately was a relief.
The Bottom Line
Qatar Airways already has one of the best business class products in the sky with Q Suites. The food is excellent, the service is consistently good, and the hard product is top-tier.
But the cancellation policy is an underrated benefit. It’s not free, but it’s reasonable enough that you won’t feel locked into a booking if your plans change or better options appear. For $25 per person, you get real flexibility without the financial pain that comes with most airline change fees.
