I finally got to try Starlux Airlines, and I’m genuinely impressed. This relatively new Taiwanese carrier has been making waves in the points and miles community, and after experiencing their A350-900 business class from Los Angeles to Taipei, I completely understand the hype.

But before I dive into the champagne and fuzzy blankets, let’s talk about whether this redemption actually makes sense from a value perspective.

The Booking: Bilt to Alaska Miles Sweet Spot

I booked this round-trip LAX-TPE ticket for 75,000 Alaska Mileage Plan miles (transferred from Bilt Rewards), plus around $150 in taxes and fees. The cash price would’ve been just over $7,000 round-trip, meaning my 75,000 Bilt points got me over $3,500 in value on the way there!

Let’s do the math: $3,500 in value for 75,000 miles equals 4.6 cents per point. That’s an excellent redemption by any measure.

The strategic play here: Bilt Rewards are the only points that transfer 1:1 to Alaska Airlines, and Alaska is one of Starlux’s partnership options for award bookings. Since Bilt points are relatively easy to earn, and do not require a credit card, it the quickest path to this redemption.

Alaska’s partnership with Starlux means you can book these flights without dealing with dynamic pricing nonsense. The availability has been hit-or-miss in my experience, and you’ll want to book well in advance or last minute.

For our trip, we actually had a different flight booked and ended up switching to this one as availability opened up just 3 days before departure.

First Impressions: The Hard Product Delivers

Starlux’s A350-900 business class features a reverse herringbone layout in a 1-2-1 configuration, which means every seat has direct aisle access.

Here’s what immediately stood out: the closing door because it creates a genuine sense of privacy. You feel like you’re in your own little space, not just a slightly fancier seat surrounded by other passengers.

The seat itself is incredibly comfortable even before they add the mattress pad. But once the crew put down that mattress pad for sleeping, it’s legitimately one of the most comfortable lie-flat beds I’ve experienced in business class. I managed to get a solid six-hour nap, woke up naturally, and actually felt rested.

Storage and Space

The footwell is angled like most reverse herringbone seats, but it feels remarkably spacious. I never felt cramped or claustrophobic, even while sleeping. What I really appreciated was the double armrest design on the side of the seat. When you’re lying down, you don’t feel like you’re going to roll off, but you also don’t feel boxed in. It’s a thoughtful design choice that makes a real difference in sleep quality.

Storage is abundant. There are multiple compartments for personal items, plus a proper shelf area for your devices. I never had that annoying moment of “where do I put my phone/headphones/book” that happens on some business class products (cough, cough, ANA The Room).

The Entertainment System

The TV is huge and 4K. Seriously impressive screen quality. The movie selection was decent but not extensive – you’re not getting an overwhelming content library, but there was enough to keep me entertained. I found several movies I wanted to watch, and the 4K quality made them genuinely enjoyable to watch.

The Soft Product: Where Starlux Really Shines

This is where Starlux differentiates itself from other Asian carriers. The attention to detail in the soft product is genuinely impressive.

Amenity Kit and Bedding

The Paul Smith x Starlux amenity kit is beautiful and actually functional. The eye mask was genuinely comfortable (I’m picky about these), the socks were cozy, and they even included a sheet face mask. It’s a nice touch that goes beyond the standard toothbrush-and-lip-balm situation you get on many carriers.

But the real star was the bedding. They provide one of those fuzzy, plush blankets that you’d actually want to curl up with at home. I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a fuzzy blanket on a long-haul flight before, and it made such a difference. Combined with a comfortable pillow, the sleeping setup was legitimately cozy.

Pajamas Better Than Air France La Première

Starlux provides actual pajamas and slippers, and here’s the thing –they’re more comfortable than the Air France La Première pajamas I recently tried. I’m not joking. The fabric is soft, they fit well, and they feel like something you’d actually want to wear, not just a branded costume.

The slippers were also comfortable and substantial. These are small details, but they add up to create a genuinely premium experience.

Service: Proactive and Attentive

The service was outstanding throughout the flight. Here’s a perfect example: I woke up from my six-hour nap, sat up, and started casually looking at the menu. I wasn’t flagging anyone down or pressing the call button – I was literally just sitting there looking at a piece of paper. Within maybe 30 seconds, a flight attendant walked by, noticed me looking at the menu, and immediately asked, “Would you like something? What can I get for you?”

That kind of attentive service without being intrusive is exactly what you want in business class. They were consistently proactive throughout the flight.

The Food: One Critical Mistake I Made

Let me save you from my error: Pre-order your meal up to 24 hours before departure. I didn’t do this, and I paid the price.

The Pre-Order Problem

I was seated toward the back of the business class cabin. By the time the meal service reached my row, the beef with mashed potatoes I wanted was completely sold out. All the other options were still available, but I’d had my heart set on that particular dish.

This isn’t a criticism of Starlux – it’s how meal service works in business class. But the pre-order system exists specifically to avoid this disappointment, and I should have used it.

Pro tip: Log into your Starlux booking at least 24 hours before departure and pre-select your meal. The system will reserve your choice so you’re guaranteed to get what you want, regardless of where you’re seated in the cabin.

What I Actually Ate (And Loved)

I ended up ordering the vegetarian option, which was a mushroom risotto with asparagus. And honestly… I would order it again by choice. The risotto was creamy and perfectly cooked, the asparagus added a nice fresh element, and the whole dish had a subtle spice to it that made it interesting. It wasn’t just “safe vegetarian airplane food” – it was genuinely delicious.

The presentation was also beautiful, topped with fresh herbs. You can see in the photo that they clearly care about plating and presentation.

Other Food Highlights

The welcome drink was a sparkling peach beverage, and I’m not usually a peach person, but it was genuinely good. Refreshing, not too sweet, and a nice way to start the flight.

The coffee was excellent – actually good coffee, not the burned-tasting stuff you often get on planes. They also served a beautiful cheese plate with crackers, dried fruit, and fig jam that I devoured.

The overall food quality was consistently high.

Connectivity: Functional But Not Blazing Fast

The WiFi worked throughout the flight, but it wasn’t particularly fast. I could check email, browse social media, and even post some content, but there was definitely lag. If you’re hoping to stream video or have video calls, manage your expectations.

For basic connectivity and staying in touch, it was perfectly adequate. I got work done, responded to messages, and kept up with what was happening online. But if you need truly high-speed internet for your work, you might be frustrated.

Would I Fly Starlux Again?

Absolutely, without hesitation. This was my first time on Starlux, and I’m already looking for excuses to book them again.

The hard product is excellent, the soft product is thoughtfully designed, the service is attentive, and the food is legitimately good. The overall experience feels cohesive and premium in a way that some airlines with fancier marketing don’t quite deliver.

Strategic Booking Recommendations

If you’re considering booking Starlux business class, here’s what I’d recommend:

Best points programs for booking:

  • Alaska Mileage Plan (transfers from Bilt)
  • Book well in advance for better availability, especially for peak travel periods, or be open to booking last minute like I did

Seat selection:

  • Window seats (A and K) give you the most privacy
  • If traveling as a couple, the center pairs (D and G) work well together
  • Avoid the very back rows if you’re sensitive to galley noise, though I didn’t find it problematic.

Food strategy:

  • Pre-order your meal 24 hours before departure (seriously, don’t skip this)
  • The vegetarian options are genuinely good, not just “safe” choices
  • Coffee quality is great – worth ordering
  • Boba is only available on routes departing from Taipei 🙁

For work/connectivity:

  • WiFi is adequate for email and light browsing but not high-speed
  • Bring downloaded content if you need to be productive without internet
  • The 4K entertainment screen is great for actual relaxation

The Bottom Line

At 75,000 Alaska miles round-trip, this represents phenomenal value for a premium transpacific experience. Even if you’re paying cash, Starlux’s pricing is often competitive with other Asian carriers, and the product delivers.

The combination of excellent hard product, thoughtful soft product touches (seriously, that fuzzy blanket), attentive service, and good food creates a business class experience that rivals carriers with much bigger marketing budgets and longer track records.

My only regret? Not pre-ordering my meal. Don’t make my mistake.
