United MileagePlus is back with a targeted buy-miles promotion running through December 24, 2025, offering either a 100% bonus or a 50% discount depending on your account. Either way, the floor price comes out to 1.88 cents per mile, not cheap, but potentially useful if you’re topping up for a premium redemption.

How Much You Need to Buy to Get the Bonus

You can buy as few as 2,000 miles, but the bonuses only kick in at 5,000 miles. To get the best rate (1.88¢ each), you need to purchase at least 40,000 miles.

For members targeted with the full 100% bonus, here are the pricing tiers:

  • 2,000–4,000 miles: No bonus (≈3.76¢/mile — skip this)
  • 5,000–19,000 miles: 30% bonus (≈2.89¢/mile)
  • 20,000–39,000 miles: 65% bonus (≈2.28¢/mile)
  • 40,000–100,000 miles: 100% bonus (≈1.88¢/mile — the sweet spot)

Keep in mind:

  • You can buy up to 200,000 miles per year
  • Miles post in up to 72 hours
  • Purchases are nonrefundable
  • Bought miles do NOT count toward Premier status

When Buying Miles Makes Sense

1. You’re topping off for a premium partner award

If you’re just short for ANA, EVA, Lufthansa, or other partner redemptions, buying a small amount can unlock exceptional value.

2. You found rare award space and need miles fast

United’s dynamic award pricing is unpredictable, so if you see a unicorn seat, you may need to act immediately.

3. A cash fare is insanely high

Last-minute Polaris flights can be wildly overpriced; buying miles to cover part of the award can be cheaper.

Bottom Line

United’s sale brings the cost of miles down to 1.88¢ at the highest tier, solid for topping up a premium award, but far too expensive for general stockpiling.

If you have award space in hand and just need the last chunk of miles, this promotion can bridge the gap. Otherwise, save your cash and wait for a better opportunity.
