The United Marriott partnership is one of the rare loyalty tie-ups that hands you free elite status in a second program without spending an extra dollar, and most people who qualify for it never bother to claim it.
Officially called RewardsPlus, the arrangement links Marriott Bonvoy and United MileagePlus so your hotel status counts for something in the air, your airline status counts for something on the ground, and your two currencies can move back and forth between accounts.
Here’s everything the partnership actually gives you, what it’s worth, and how to switch it on.
What Is RewardsPlus?
RewardsPlus is a reciprocal benefits agreement between Marriott Bonvoy and United MileagePlus. It does three distinct things: it matches elite status in both directions, it lets you convert miles into points and points into miles, and it periodically layers on bonus promotions for members who use both programs on the same trip.
None of it is automatic. You have to link the two accounts yourself, and the status match in particular requires a separate registration that a lot of eligible members simply never complete.
Free Elite Status, In Both Directions
This is the headline benefit of the United Marriott partnership, and it runs both ways.
If you have Marriott status: Bonvoy Titanium Elite and Ambassador Elite members get complimentary United MileagePlus Premier Silver.
If you have United status: Premier Gold, Platinum, and 1K members get complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite.
Two eligibility rules to keep in mind: First, you can’t have earned your qualifying status through a status match or challenge. It has to be earned through actual spend and stays. Second, you can’t already hold the status you’re being matched into. A United Premier Gold member who already has Bonvoy Platinum gains nothing here, since Gold Elite is a step down.
Allow seven to ten days after registering for the new status to appear in your account.
What Each Status Actually Gets You
Free status is only worth claiming if the benefits are real. Both of these tiers are entry-level, but neither is empty.
United Premier Silver earns 7 miles per dollar on United flights, a 40% mileage bonus, a complimentary checked bag, Group 2 boarding, preferred seating at booking, and Economy Plus access at check-in. The free checked bag alone covers the cost of claiming it, roughly, on a single round trip.
Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite delivers 25% bonus points on stays, 2 p.m. late checkout at participating brands, enhanced room upgrades subject to availability, complimentary enhanced internet, and a points welcome gift at check-in. The late checkout is the sleeper benefit — it’s the one Gold perk that consistently shows up, where upgrades depend heavily on the property.
Moving Points and Miles Between Programs
The transfer mechanics are asymmetric, and understanding the difference is where the real money is.
United miles to Marriott points converts at 1:1, which is unusually generous. It’s available to Premier Silver members and above, capped at 100,000 miles per calendar year, with a 500-mile minimum per transfer.
Marriott points to United miles converts at 3:1 — three points for one mile — but with a bonus that changes the math entirely. Transfer 60,000 Bonvoy points and you receive 20,000 miles plus a 10,000-mile bonus, for 30,000 United miles total. That’s an effective 2:1 rate, and it only applies in 60,000-point increments.
The practical takeaway: never transfer Marriott points to United in amounts that aren’t multiples of 60,000. Sending 50,000 points gets you 16,667 miles. Sending 60,000 gets you 30,000. Ten thousand extra points nearly doubles your return.
Daily transfers run from 3,000 to 240,000 Marriott points, so you can move up to four bonus-eligible blocks in a single day.
That said, transferring hotel points to airline miles is usually a losing trade unless you have a specific redemption in mind. Bonvoy points typically return more value redeemed for hotel nights than converted to miles, even at the boosted rate. Run the numbers on your actual booking before you move anything, because transfers are irreversible.
Limited Time: Bonus Points and Miles Through September 30, 2026
Marriott and United are currently running a dual-currency promotion for members of the partnership. Complete one qualifying paid Marriott stay and one qualifying paid United flight and you earn 2,000 bonus Bonvoy points and 1,500 bonus MileagePlus miles.
The details that matter:

- Eligible travel runs through September 30, 2026
- Open to Bonvoy Titanium and Ambassador Elite members, and United Premier Gold, Platinum, and 1K members
- The stay and the flight don’t have to be part of the same trip
- Paid bookings only — award stays, award tickets, and Cash + Points reservations are excluded
- Bonuses pay out in matched pairs, so five flights and one stay earns the bonus once
- There’s no cap on how many pairs you can earn, but you can only participate in one dual-currency campaign per calendar year

How to Link Your United and Marriott Accounts
Registration depends on which program you’re coming from, and the two paths use different URLs.

Sign in with the account you already hold status in, confirm your membership number in the other program, and submit. Your matched status should appear within seven to ten days. Linking your accounts is also a prerequisite for the transfer benefits and any dual-currency promotion, so it’s worth doing even if you don’t currently qualify for a status match.
Who Gets the Most Value From This
The United Marriott partnership pays off most obviously for two groups.
If you’re a road warrior who’s already Bonvoy Titanium but flies United only occasionally, Premier Silver turns those scattered flights into something better — free bags, better boarding, Economy Plus at check-in. You did nothing extra to earn it.
If you’re United Premier Gold or above and stay at Marriott properties a handful of times a year without ever hitting elite status, Gold Elite gives you late checkout and bonus points on stays you were making anyway.
The group that gains least: anyone who already holds mid-tier or better status in both programs. The match can’t upgrade you, and the transfer ratios rarely beat redeeming each currency in its own program.
For everyone in between, the calculation is simple. Registration takes about three minutes, costs nothing, and can’t reduce any status you currently hold. If you qualify, there’s no argument for leaving it unclaimed.
