If you’re working toward (or requalifying for) MileagePlus Premier status, here’s the short version: the rules aren’t getting harder, and there are a few meaningful upgrades coming that make status more useful next year.
Let’s walk through what’s changing (and what’s not).
Premier Qualification Thresholds Are Staying Exactly the Same
First, the big relief: United is not increasing the PQP or PQF requirements for any Premier tier in 2026.
The thresholds will remain identical to 2025:
- Premier Silver: 5,000 PQP + 15 PQF or 6,000 PQP
- Premier Gold: 10,000 PQP + 30 PQF or 12,000 PQP
- Premier Platinum: 15,000 PQP + 45 PQF or 18,000 PQP
- Premier 1K: 22,000 PQP + 60 PQF or 28,000 PQP
If you’ve already mapped out your earning strategy based on current thresholds, you don’t need to redo your math.
Starter PQP Deposits Are Back in 2026
If you earned Premier status in 2025, United will once again give you a head start in early 2026 with a complimentary PQP deposit.
These deposits are unchanged from last year:
- Premier Silver: 300 PQP
- Premier Gold: 600 PQP
- Premier Platinum: 900 PQP
- Premier 1K: 1,400 PQP
It’s not enough to carry you to re-qualification, but it does make January feel a lot less brutal.
Credit Card Spend Will Now Unlock More PlusPoints
This is one of the more meaningful updates.
Starting January 1, 2026, PQP earned from eligible United credit card spending will now count toward earning additional PlusPoints for Premier 1K and above.
Key detail:
There is no cap on the number of PlusPoints you can earn this way.
Award Tickets Are Becoming Upgrade-Eligible
Beginning February 1, 2026, United is expanding upgrade eligibility in a big way:
- PlusPoints can be used on award tickets
- Complimentary Premier Upgrades (CPUs) can also apply to award tickets
- This applies to all Premier tiers, not just top elites
This is a big deal if you regularly book with miles — especially on domestic routes where upgrades are already competitive.
Better Access to Polaris Saver Awards (For Some Members)
United is also expanding access to Polaris Saver Award availability.
The following groups now get increased access:
- United Chase cardmembers
- Premier Silver members
- Premier Gold members
This doesn’t mean Polaris Saver seats will suddenly be everywhere — but it does improve your odds of finding lower-priced Polaris awards when they’re released.
A Heads-Up on PlusPoints: Dynamic Pricing Is Coming (Later)
Looking further ahead, United confirmed a change that won’t kick in until February 2027:
- The fixed PlusPoints upgrade chart will be retired
- Upgrade costs will move to a dynamic model, based on factors like demand and cabin
This could add flexibility — or unpredictability — depending on how it’s implemented. For now, it’s just something to keep on your radar.
Credit Card PQP Earning Updates
There are also a few updates for specific United cardholders:
United MileagePlus Visa Infinite Cardmembers
- Earn 1 PQP per $20 spent
- Annual cap: 1,500 PQP for the 2026 program year
First Hawaiian Bank United Cardmembers (Personal & Business)
- Earn 1 PQP per $20 spent
- Annual cap increases to 2,000 PQP for 2026
Bottom Line
United’s 2026 Premier updates are less about earning faster and more about getting more value once you’re in. Stable thresholds, early-year PQP boosts, and broader upgrade eligibility mean your status strategy doesn’t need a reset — just a refinement.
If you’re aiming for Premier status next year, the takeaway is simple: keep doing what works, lean into award bookings, and don’t overlook how credit card PQP and PlusPoints now fit into the bigger picture.
