Ashley Furniture is sitting at up to 15x on Rakuten today, which turns a purchase you were already making into one of the highest points-per-dollar plays available right now.
Furniture is a big-ticket, low-frequency buy — the exact category where a percentage-based portal rate does real damage. A $3,000 sectional at 15x is 45,000 points. That’s not a rounding error; that’s a business class leg.
The three earning tiers
Everyone shopping through Rakuten gets the elevated base rate today — 15x per dollar. Two things stack on top of that:

21x — Rakuten cardholders. Holding the Rakuten American Express Card unlocks an elevated cardholder rate at participating stores. You don’t have to use the card to get it; you just have to have it.
25x — cardholders who actually pay with the card. The Rakuten Amex earns an extra 4% back on Rakuten purchases, and that stacks on top of the cardholder rate. Same click, same checkout, ten extra points per dollar versus the base tier.
The card has no annual fee, so the only real cost of moving from 15x to 25x is the application.

What that looks like on a real purchase
Below is the math on a few common furniture spends. Numbers assume points valued at 1 cent, which is conservative for transferable currency.
| Purchase | 15x Base | 21x Cardholder | 25x Paid w/ card |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1,500 | 22,500 | 31,500 | 37,500 |
| $3,000 | 45,000 | 63,000 | 75,000 |
| $5,000 | 75,000 | 105,000 | 125,000 |
| $8,000 | 120,000 | 168,000 | 200,000 |
Points shown assume a 1% = 1 point payout converted to Amex Membership Rewards or Bilt. Extra card earning is capped at $10,000 in Rakuten spend per year.
Turning it into Amex points — or Bilt
This is the part most people skip. By default Rakuten pays you in cash via PayPal or check. Inside your Rakuten account settings, you can switch your payout to American Express Membership Rewards points instead, at 1 cent per point. Flip that one setting and every dollar of cash back becomes a transferable point that can move to Delta, Air Canada Aeroplan, Virgin Atlantic, Hyatt, and the rest of the Amex partner list.
The same setting also supports Bilt Rewards if you’d rather feed that balance. Pick one, set it once, and forget it — it applies to everything you earn going forward.
Two habits that protect the earning: click through Rakuten immediately before checkout so the tracking cookie is fresh, and don’t open other coupon extensions or tabs mid-purchase, since those can overwrite the attribution.
Set it up before you check out
If you don’t have a Rakuten account yet, sign up first — new members earn 5,000 bonus points after their first qualifying purchase, which stacks on top of whatever the furniture store is paying today.

Then: set your payout to Membership Rewards or Bilt, search your furniture retailer inside Rakuten, click through, and buy.
