The latest Atmos Rewards changes are some of the biggest since Alaska and Hawaiian merged their programs, and the first one kicks in this Thursday, Oct. 1.

Alaska Air Group announced a full slate of updates today: a choice in how you earn on flights, four new Atmos Communities, a debit card for 2027, Bank of America points transfers, a business card refresh, a monthly Members Day, and bigger upgrade perks for top-tier elites.

Here’s what each one means for you and what I’d actually pay attention to.

Choose How You Earn Starts Oct. 1

Atmos Rewards is about to become the only airline loyalty program that lets you pick how you earn on flights. Starting Oct. 1, 2026, you can choose to earn points and status points by distance traveled, price paid, or segments flown. Your choice applies to flights departing on or after Jan. 1, 2027.

Choosing is optional. If you’re a current member and do nothing, you’ll keep earning by distance. New members who join on or after Jan. 1, 2027, will default to price paid. Everyone can change their choice once per calendar year for future travel.

The pattern is pretty clear. Cheap long-haul fares favor distance, expensive tickets and premium cabins favor price paid, and short, cheap hops favor segments. If your travel mixes all three, distance is a reasonable default, which is why doing nothing isn’t a bad outcome for most existing members. Run a few of your typical 2027 trips through the math before you switch, since you’re locked in for the calendar year.

Atmos Communities Expand From Two to Six

Also starting Oct. 1, Atmos Communities grow from two resident programs, Club 49 for Alaska residents and Huakaʻi by Hawaiian for Hawaiʻi residents, to six. The four new ones are Global Locals for international travelers, Families on the Go for people traveling with young kids, Culinary Journeys for food-focused trips, and Active Escapes for outdoor and adventure travel.

Alaska’s Communities fact sheet lists a range of perks, including free bags, exclusive flight deals, partner offers, and 20% off select Atmos Rewards Unlocked experiences. A few stand out because they’re tied to specific travel styles: 10% bonus status points on international travel, 20% points back on award flights for children 12 and under, and 50% bonus points and status points on Neighbor Island travel in Hawaiʻi starting Jan. 1, 2027.

There’s also a Bonus Points Challenge worth up to 10,000 bonus points and status points for visiting 10 curated destinations, plus 1 status point for every 25 points transferred in from an eligible loyalty partner. The fact sheet doesn’t make clear which Communities get those last two, so I’ll confirm once enrollment opens.

An Atmos Rewards Debit Card Is Coming in Early 2027

Alaska is extending Atmos Rewards into everyday banking with a debit card planned for early 2027. It will earn both Atmos points and status points, and Alaska lists a choice of card designs, discounts on flights and onboard purchases, free points sharing, no foreign transaction fees, and the ability to pay certain account fees with points.

Atmos Debit Card

Alaska hasn’t published earn rates, fees, or full terms yet, so I’ll hold off on the math until those are official.

Bank of America Points Transfers in 2027

In 2027, customers with eligible Bank of America card products will be able to transfer points into Atmos Rewards. Alaska hasn’t said which cards qualify or what the transfer ratio will be.

This one matters. Bilt is currently the only way to transfer points into Atmos, and Alaska says it plans to add more transfer partners with select global financial institutions over time.

The Atmos Business Card Gets a Refresh

The Bank of America Atmos Rewards Visa Business Card gets refreshed in late 2026. Alaska previewed 10x points on eligible purchases through Atmos Rewards for Business, lounge passes, and free same-day confirmed flight changes. Full details are due later this fall, so I’ll wait for the fine print before weighing in.

Atmos Members Day and New Lifestyle Partners

Atmos Members Day lands on the first Wednesday of every month. That’s when Alaska plans to drop exclusive travel offers, partner perks, program updates, new Atmos Unlocked experiences, and Global Getaways. Upcoming partners include Alterra Mountain Company, Nordstrom, and Pebble Beach Resorts, with some of those experiences bookable through Atmos Unlocked.

Bigger Upgrade Perks for Platinum and Titanium

Starting Nov. 2, Platinum and Titanium members can bring eligible children and one companion into Premium Class on a complimentary, space-available basis. For families flying together, that’s one of the more tangible elite perks in this whole announcement. Alaska is also rolling out a redesigned activity page later this year to make it easier to track earning and status progress.
