How to Buy Alaska Miles

Alaska lets you purchase Atmos Rewards points directly through Points.com. Here’s how:

1. Log into your Alaska Atmos Rewards account
2. Navigate to the buy miles page
3. Select how many points you want to buy
4. Complete payment

Points typically post instantly, but can take up to 16 hours. Purchases are processed by Points.com, so they won’t code as an airline purchase on your credit card. Use a card where you’re working toward a minimum spend or one that maximizes everyday spending. You must have been an Atmos Rewards member for at least 10 days before you can purchase miles.

Purchase Limits and Elite Status

Your purchase limit depends on your Atmos Rewards elite status: 

Non-elite members: Can purchase up to 150,000 miles per calendar year through Points.com. Bonus points don’t count toward this limit, so at 90% bonus you’d receive up to 285,000 total points. 

Elite members (Silver, Gold, Platinum, Titanium): No annual purchase limit. You can buy as much as you need, 100,000 miles per transaction at a time. Purchased points do not count toward elite status qualification. They’re purely for redemptions. All purchases are non-refundable, so make sure you have a specific trip in mind before buying.

Is Buying Alaska Miles Worth It?

At 1.88¢ per mile, Alaska miles are worth buying when you can redeem them for more than 2¢ per mile in value. That’s honestly a low bar for this program because Alaska’s partner award chart has some of the best sweet spots in the industry.

Here’s a real example from a flight a client of mine just booked with this sale:

Washington D.C. → Dublin, Aer Lingus Business Class (Roundtrip) 90,000 miles roundtrip (45,000 each way).

Cash price: $3,582.

Cost in purchased miles ~$1,692 (at 1.88¢ each). Saved: $1,890 in one booking for one person.

Alaska miles work on all Oneworld partners plus airlines like Fiji Airways, Condor, and Starlux. The sweet spots are everywhere: Japan Airlines business and first class to Japan, Cathay Pacific to Asia, Qatar Qsuites to the Middle East, American Airlines domestic first class, and British Airways short-haul in Europe.

Alaska also offers free stopovers on one-way awards, which means you can visit two cities for the price of one. 

Where it doesn’t work: Economy flights where the cash price is already competitive. If an economy ticket costs $300 and the award costs 20,000 miles ($396 in purchased miles), just pay cash.

Smart Buying Strategy

If you’re going to buy Alaska miles, do it right: 

Find your flight first. Search for award availability on Alaska’s website before purchasing any points. There’s no point buying 100,000 points if the flight you want doesn’t have award seats. 

Buy exactly what you need. Calculate the exact number of points required for your redemption, add a small buffer and buy that amount. Don’t buy 190,000 points “hoping” you’ll use them later, unless you’re already very familiar with the program and redemption rates/availability.

Check your targeted offer. Log in and see what bonus you’re actually getting. If you’re only seeing a 70% bonus, the math changes significantly (2.21¢ vs 1.98¢ per mile). 

Compare to cash. Always compare the total cost of purchased miles against the cash price of the same ticket. If the cash fare is cheaper, skip the points. We have a calculator for this.

When to Buy Alaska Miles

Alaska runs bonus promotions regularly, typically every 4–6 weeks. The bonuses range from 40% to 100%, with 50–90% being the most common.

Here’s how to evaluate each sale: 90–100% bonus (1.88–1.98¢/point): Best rates. Buy if you have a specific premium cabin redemption planned. This is where we are right now. 

70–80% bonus (2.09–2.21¢/point): Still works for high-value redemptions like JAL or Cathay business where you’re getting 5+ cents per mile in value. Marginal for shorter routes. 

50–60% bonus (2.35–2.51¢/point): Only worth it for the absolute best redemptions. Most people should wait for a better sale.
