Chase Freedom categories for Q3 2026 are now live, and this is a summer-spending quarter through and through. Gas stations, EV charging, public transit, select live entertainment, and United Way donations all earn 5% cash back from July 1 through September 30. If you have a Chase Freedom Flex, here’s exactly what qualifies, how to activate, and how to actually hit the $1,500 cap without forcing spend you wouldn’t make anyway.
What Are the Chase Freedom Q3 2026 Categories?
From July 1 through September 30, 2026, Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex cardholders earn 5% cash back (or 5x Ultimate Rewards points) on up to $1,500 in combined purchases across these categories:
Gas Stations and EV Charging. Fuel purchases at gas stations plus electric vehicle charging both qualify. This is the workhorse category for most people this quarter.
Public Transit. Chase defines this as operators of passenger trains, buses, ferries, toll bridges and highways, and parking lots and garages. Commuter passes, tolls, and parking are the easy ways to rack this up.
Select Live Entertainment. This covers tickets to live in-person entertainment: major sporting events, concerts, theatrical productions, museums, zoos and aquariums, tourist attractions, amusement parks, circuses, and carnivals. Ticket agencies selling on behalf of the venue are included. Here’s the gotcha worth knowing before you plan around it. Movie theaters, bowling alleys, horse racing tracks, casinos, and dance halls or clubs are not included. Tickets purchased through a hotel or concierge, or as part of a travel package, also do not count.
United Way. Donations to United Way earn 5%.
After $1,500 in combined spending across all four categories, everything drops back to 1% (except dining and drugstores, which keep earning 3% on the Freedom Flex).
How to Activate Chase Freedom Q3 Categories
Activation opens today, June 15, 2026. You can activate any time during the quarter and your 5% applies retroactively to purchases from July 1, so there’s no penalty for activating late. The only real mistake is forgetting entirely.
- Log into your Chase account (app or website)
- Select your Freedom or Freedom Flex card
- Click Activate Now on the Q3 bonus categories banner
- Done. You only activate once per quarter.
Based on Chase’s standard pattern, the activation deadline lands on September 14, 2026. Confirm the exact date on your activation screen, since that’s the one place it’s posted definitively.
If you use CardPointers, your category activations sync automatically so you never miss a quarter.
How to Maximize Chase Freedom Q3 Categories
$1,500 in combined spending earns you $75 in cash back or 7,500 Ultimate Rewards points. Here’s how to get there cleanly.
Gas and EV Charging: The Easy Base
For most households, fuel alone gets you a meaningful chunk of the way to $1,500 over three months. If you drive an EV, public charging networks count too. Many gas stations also sell gift cards to retailers and restaurants you already use, which can help close the gap, though watch your station’s gift card limits and treat this as a top-up rather than the whole strategy.
Public Transit: Underrated for Commuters
If you commute by train or bus, load your monthly or weekly passes onto the Freedom Flex this quarter. Parking garages and tolls also fall in this bucket, so daily parking and bridge or highway tolls quietly add up. For anyone in a transit-heavy city, this category can carry the quarter on its own.
Select Live Entertainment: Plan Around What You’d Buy Anyway
Summer is concert and ballgame season, so if you already have tickets in mind, route them through the Freedom Flex. Direct venue purchases and ticket agencies acting for the venue qualify. Just remember movie theaters are out this quarter, so don’t count a Friday night film toward your cap.
The Sapphire + Freedom Flex Combo
This is the move most people miss. The Freedom Flex earns cash back by default. But if you also hold a Chase Sapphire Preferred or Reserve, you can move your Freedom Flex points into your Sapphire account, where they become transferable Ultimate Rewards points.
Here’s the math. Max the cap and you have 7,500 points. As straight cash back, that’s $75. Booked through the Chase Travel portal, still roughly $75 at 1 cent per point. But transferred to airline and hotel partners, those same 7,500 points are commonly worth 2 to 5 cents each, which puts them in the $150 to $375 range depending on the redemption. Across all four quarters, maxing each one gives you 30,000 points a year. That’s $300 in cash, or meaningfully more in transfer value, from a card with no annual fee.
If you don’t have a Sapphire card yet, the Chase Sapphire Preferred is the most common pairing at $95 a year, and it unlocks the full value of every point your Freedom Flex earns.
Who Should Skip This Quarter
Not every quarter is a fit for every wallet, and this one is spend-dependent. If you don’t drive much, don’t take transit, and don’t have live events on the calendar, three of the four categories are hard to hit naturally. United Way is the only one left, and you should never donate just to chase 5%. Forcing $1,500 in spending to earn $75 is not a win, it’s a $1,425 net outflow on stuff you didn’t need.
If that’s your situation, activate anyway (it costs nothing and you’ll catch incidental gas or parking), but don’t reorganize your spending around it. A quarter where Amazon or grocery is the category will serve you better, and those come back around.
Q2 2026 Categories (Ending June 30)
If you activated Q2, you can still earn 5% on Amazon, Whole Foods, Chase Travel, and Feeding America through June 30, 2026. You can have both Q2 and Q3 activated at once during the overlap. Q2 categories earn 5% through June 30, and Q3 categories start earning July 1.

Don’t Forget to Pair It
The Chase Freedom Flex is strong on its own, but it’s built to work inside the Chase ecosystem.
Freedom Flex (no annual fee) earns 5% in quarterly categories plus 3% on dining and drugstores. This is your earning card.
Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve unlock transfers to airline and hotel partners. This is your redemption card. Combine your Freedom Flex points into the Sapphire account, transfer to partners like United, Hyatt, or Southwest, and your quarterly points are suddenly worth multiples of their cash value.
We track every current Chase transfer bonus on our Transfer Bonuses page, so check there before you transfer.
