The Rakuten SoFi bonus just jumped from $125 to $300, and it stacks with SoFi’s own direct deposit bonus for a combined $700 when you open one account. That’s not a typo. One application, two bonuses, real money.

I’ll walk you through the math, the requirements that actually matter, and who should skip this entirely.

How the Rakuten SoFi Bonus Works

Rakuten is a cash back shopping portal. When you click through Rakuten to a retailer (or in this case, a bank), Rakuten earns a referral commission and shares part of it with you as cash back. Right now, clicking through Rakuten to open a SoFi Checking & Savings account pays you $300 in Rakuten cash back, up from the previous $125 offer.

If you don’t have a Rakuten account yet, sign up here for another $50 bonus.

To qualify for the Rakuten side, you need to:

Apply for a new SoFi Checking and Savings account through the Rakuten link, then post a direct deposit of at least $500 within 45 days of clicking the cash back link. The cash back posts to your Rakuten account after the qualifying direct deposit clears, which can take several weeks.

This is for new SoFi members only. If you’ve ever had a SoFi Checking & Savings account before, you’re not eligible for the Rakuten bonus.

The SoFi Direct Deposit Bonus (Separate Offer)

Here’s where it gets interesting. SoFi runs its own direct deposit bonus completely separately from Rakuten, and you can earn both with the same direct deposits.

SoFi’s bonus has two tiers based on how much you direct deposit within 25 days of your first eligible direct deposit:

The $50 tier requires at least $1,000 in eligible direct deposits during the 25-day window. The $400 tier requires at least $5,000 in eligible direct deposits during the same 25-day window.

You can only qualify for one tier. If you hit $5,000, you get $400 (not $50 plus $400). The SoFi promotion runs through December 31, 2026.

The $700 Stacking Math

This is where the Rakuten SoFi bonus becomes genuinely worth your time.

If you direct deposit $5,000 within 25 days of opening, you trigger both bonuses on the same activity. The Rakuten side requires only $500 minimum, so any amount that hits the SoFi $400 tier automatically clears Rakuten’s threshold.

The combined value is $700 cash for opening one account, plus access to SoFi’s 4.00% APY (3.30% base savings rate plus a 0.70% APY boost for new members with eligible direct deposit). For context, the average savings account in the U.S. pays about 0.40% APY.

What Counts as an Eligible Direct Deposit

This is where most people lose the bonus. SoFi is strict about what qualifies.

Eligible direct deposits include payroll from an employer, pension or government agency payments, and other recurring deposits processed through the ACH network and designated as direct deposit.

These do not count: peer-to-peer transfers from Zelle, Venmo, PayPal, or Cash App, external ACH transfers from another bank account you own, mobile check deposits, and one-time non-recurring deposits.

If your employer uses standard payroll, you’re fine. If you’re self-employed or rely on platform payments, verify the deposit method designates as direct deposit before counting on the bonus.

When Do You Get Paid

The two bonuses pay out on different timelines.

SoFi credits the direct deposit bonus to your checking account within seven business days after the 25-day bonus period ends. So if your first qualifying direct deposit hits on day one, expect the SoFi bonus around day 32.

Rakuten cash back posts to your Rakuten account after SoFi confirms the qualifying direct deposit, which Rakuten notes can take several weeks or longer. From there, you wait for Rakuten’s quarterly Big Fat Check payout cycle (Rakuten pays out earnings every three months).

Plan on the SoFi $400 hitting in about a month and the Rakuten $300 taking up to a full quarter to fully cash out.

Cash Out Rakuten as Amex Points to Boost Your Return

Here’s the move that turns this from a good bonus into a great one. Rakuten lets you redeem cash back as American Express Membership Rewards points instead of cash, at a 1:100 ratio. Every $1 of Rakuten cash back converts to 100 MR points.

That means the $300 Rakuten SoFi bonus can become 30,000 American Express or Bilt Rewards points instead of $300 cash.

This only works if you link an eligible American Express or Bilt card to your Rakuten account before the cash back posts. Once linked, you toggle your payout preference to points, and Rakuten auto-converts all future earnings.

The math gets even better when you stack the welcome bonus. New Rakuten members who sign up through our referral link and make a qualifying purchase of $50 within 90 days earn either $50 cash or 5,000 Membership Rewards points as a welcome bonus. If you sign up through my link, set your payout to MR or Bilt points, and run any $50 qualifying purchase through Rakuten, you bank the 5,000 welcome bonus on top of everything else.

Combined with the SoFi play, that’s 35,000 Membership Rewards points plus the $400 SoFi cash bonus for opening one bank account and running one small qualifying Rakuten purchase. At conservative transferable-partner valuations of 2 cents per point, the 35,000 MR alone is worth $700 toward premium travel redemptions. Add the $400 SoFi cash and you’re at roughly $1,100 in total value instead of $700.

For anyone working toward a specific Membership Rewards redemption (Aeroplan business class, Air France/KLM Flying Blue promo awards, Avianca LifeMiles sweet spots), this is one of the fastest ways to bank a meaningful chunk of points without any spend or annual fee.

How to Maximize This Offer

A few moves before you apply.

Sign up for Rakuten through our referral link first if you’re not already a member, so you pick up the $50 welcome bonus on top of the $300.

Change your cash out method in account settings to Amex Membership Rewards or Bilt points if you want to earn points instead of cash back on the Rakuten earnings. The SoFi earnings can only be cash back.

Then click through Rakuten to SoFi and apply for the Checking & Savings account in the same browser session, with cookies enabled and ad blockers off. Rakuten tracking breaks easily.

Set up your direct deposit immediately after approval. The 45-day Rakuten window starts when you click the cash back link, not when you open the account, so the clock is already ticking. Aim to hit $5,000 in direct deposits as fast as possible to lock in both bonuses on the same paycheck cycle.

Finally, leave the account open at least 90 days after the bonus posts. SoFi doesn’t have an explicit clawback policy, but closing an account immediately after a bonus often triggers one anyway across the industry.
