Rakuten Big Stack returns Sunday, October 4 at 5:00 p.m. PT and runs through Wednesday, October 7 at 11:59 p.m. PT, with 37 stores paying 10% back or more. Travel is the standout category this round, with Expedia, Hotels.com, Vrbo, Viator, and TripAdvisor all on the list, alongside Dyson, Sonos, LEGO, Gap, and Macy’s.
If you set your account to earn points instead of cash, 10% back becomes 10 points per dollar in Amex Membership Rewards or Bilt Points. That is on top of whatever your credit card earns on the same purchase.
How Rakuten Works
Rakuten is a free shopping portal. You click through Rakuten’s site, app, or browser extension before you check out at a store, the store pays Rakuten a commission, and Rakuten shares part of it with you. Nothing changes about the price you pay or the card you use, so your credit card rewards stack on top.
By default Rakuten pays in cash. To earn points, go to Account Settings, open How I Get Paid, and choose Amex Membership Rewards or Bilt Rewards. Every $1 in cash back becomes 100 points, and you do not need a Bilt credit card to pick Bilt, only a free Bilt Rewards account. Make the switch before you shop, since your payout setting decides what you receive.

New To Rakuten? Start With The Welcome Bonus
New members who join through my Rakuten link can earn a $50 welcome bonus, or 5,000 points if the account is set to points, after meeting the qualifying purchase requirement shown at signup. A single Big Stack purchase can cover that requirement and earn the elevated rate at the same time.
As an illustration of how this can add up when timed right, a new member who books a $300 hotel stay through Hotels.com during Big Stack could earn 3,000 points from the 10% rate plus the 5,000 point welcome bonus, for 8,000 points before counting credit card rewards. A few of these deserve a closer look. Dermstore at 15% and iHerb at 12% sit above the headline rate. The security subscriptions carry the biggest numbers, with Norton at 80%, LifeLock at 75%, and McAfee at 70%, though these offers are typically limited to new customers and specific plans. LifeLock has run as high as 90% earlier this year, so this is a good rate rather than a peak one.
One timing note for travelers. Viator is at 14% through Sunday, October 4 at 4:59 p.m. PT, then drops to 10% once Big Stack begins. If you have a tour to book, do it before the switch.
How To Make Sure Your Purchase Tracks
Start every purchase from Rakuten, whether that is the site, the app, or the browser extension, and complete checkout in the same session. Skip coupon codes that are not listed on Rakuten, since outside codes can void the cash back. Turn off ad blockers while you shop, and screenshot the rate and your order confirmation in case you need to file a missing cash back claim. Rakuten pays out quarterly, so points from this event will not post right away.
